Shanghai’s New Waste Management Policy Workshop at PwC Shanghai

On April 1st, 2019, Green Initiatives held a Lunch n’ Learn session at PwC Shanghai Office on China's Waste Journey, with a focus on The New Shanghai Waste Management Policy.

Throughout the session, employees of PwC were very seen engaged and inspired by the idea their company has attempting to integrate into their business operations. Several staff shared their opinions and ideas that led to interesting discussions and debates.

To further continue this enthusiasm amongst their staff and empower them into more action the company will also hold a plastic clean up trip for about 50 staff members on April 13th, titled 'Getting In Touch With Our Waste'.

China produces 10bn tons of solid waste every year and some cities are literally surrounded by garbage; hazardous waste, household garbage & medical waste generation are still growing

The New Shanghai Waste Management Policy

The new policy puts waste into 4 categories: Hazardous Waste: waste that contains hazardous chemical substances, Food Waste: biodegradable waste such as food leftovers or organics, Residual Waste: waste that are contaminated by food or human waste, and Recyclable Waste: waste that are not contaminated and recyclable.

This shows how waste is collected, sorted, and disposed / recycled according to the new Shanghai Waste Management Policy.
