It has only taken China two decades to become the world’s largest bottled water consumer and a major producer. Concern over drinking water safety is one of the key drivers of the rapid growth. In this report we seek to go behind the bottle to explore the rise of the bottled water industry and its exposure to physical water risks.
Access to clean water is basic human right. Yet from a basic public good, it has been increasingly appropriated by TNCs as a commodity and traded as such. In China, the privatisation of water supply has been proceeding for the last 15 years and one of the consequences is the rise of gigantic Chinese water companies.
