Everyone is talking about it, some people are doing something about it – what can YOU do?
After almost five years of creating environmental awareness in Shanghai, Green Initiatives will launch our first community-focused Green Day – where everyone can do a little something to make a difference!
The goal of Green Day is to awaken the green giant in you and give you an outlet for all that pent up green energy by giving you ideas and choices on what you can do to reduce your ecological footprint, cut down waste, and seek healthier and more sustainable alternatives in your daily lives. YOU CAN make a difference! So come, have fun, be inspired, feel empowered and start acting!
Clothing Exchange, Reuse and Recycling
Goal: Get rid of all those clothes that you haven’t worn in ages, and will not likely wear again, but would be a waste to just throw away.
- Make space in your wardrobe.
- Keep them out of landfills.
- Help someone in need.
What you can do: Bring your unwanted clothes to Green Day, give them away to people who want them and look for clothes that you like. Items that don’t find new owners can be left with us and we will help find them a new home.
What we do: Leftover items will be sent to River of Hearts or the Shanghai Government for reuse or they will be sent to be recycled through I:CO.
DIY Natural Home Cleaning Products
Goal: From floor cleaners to shower gels and laundry detergents, learn how chemical-free options can be made at home with some basic ingredients. Reduce the amount of chemical-laden products you use to clean your homes. They’re bad for your health, and bad for the environment.
What you can do: Watch and learn how to make chemical-free cleaning products in a few easy steps. Bring some empty containers and take some home-made cleaning products home.
What we do: We have partnered with the founders of Soapnut Republic who will demonstrate how easy it is to make some cleaning products. The entrance fee comes with a set of instructions to make you own products.
Vegetarian Cooking & Lifestyle
Goal: Adopt a vegetarian lifestyle and eat seasonal local produce as a healthy and effective way to reduce the global-warming effects of livestock production and “food miles”.
What you can do: Watch the cooking demonstration and taste the dishes. Get some fresh ideas on how you can make healthy and delicious meals in no time and cost next to nothing!
What we do: The chef from Green Vege Café will demonstrate the preparation of easy and tasty vegetarian meals using local produce. The entrance fee comes with a set of vegetarian meal recipes.
Home Appliance Exchange and Recycle
Goal: Turn that extra blender or toaster that you are not using into a coffee maker or rice cooker that you actually need. Get rid of clutter in exchange for something useful (to you), without spending more money or adding to the landfill.
What you can do: For a small fee, a limited number of participants will be provided a space to display their items that can be exchanged with neighbors or sold to the public. Please ensure that all items are properly functional and please remember that this is done in the spirit of recycling and reducing waste – not profits. To be a participant, please email us.
What we do: Participants can choose to bring unsold items home or leave them behind. Leftover items will either be given to charity or recycled through our partners, Selot.
Goal: Apart from removing chemical by-products like formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and benzene from the air, plants have immense therapeutic value. Improve your indoor air quality by growing more plants in your home and office. Or help your children to cultivate a love for plants and nature.
What you can do: Bring empty containers that can serve as pots for plants. Bring your children who might like to experience the fun of growing their own plants! And bring your green thumbs!
What we do: Green Initiatives will provide you with some potting soil, seeds for a variety of plants, and a few simple instructions to get you started with your indoor garden. We have also partnered with hydroponic experts from The Verdura who will show you how you can set up you own hydroponic systems in your home.
