The Healthiest Workplace in China: Presentation and Tour
- 09-04-2015 18:30 - 21:00
- Lend Lease Greater China Office, Shanghai
Do you know what it feels like to work from an office that has the best indoor air quality in a country constantly facing air pollution issues? How about working from an office that has the lowest indoor CO2 levels, not just in China, but globally? (with current global CO2 levels being around 400). How about an office space that is free from all sorts of deadly chemicals such as Formaldehyde, Benzene, etc?
The Lend Lease HQ in Shanghai is just that and more. As a pilot project undergoing RESET™ certification, the office began tracking indoor air quality (IAQ) across 5 health parameters (see below) shortly after completion. The results are changing how we view the contribution of interior spaces to environmental regeneration.
The Lend Lease office checks all the boxes in terms of being a modern 'green' office: from access to natural light through to integrated recycling stations. It is also beautifully designed, especially in terms of artificial lighting, where the majority of lights were removed from the ceiling and brought closer to the occupants by using canopy like fixtures between the workstations.
Yet what truly sets the office apart is its integration and use of plants as machines for tempering indoor air quality. David Nieh, Head of Lend Lease China, pursued the oft quoted but rarely implemented figure of 8 plants per person, established by Dr. Wolverton during his research for NASA. The visual result is a layering of plants neatly arrayed atop filing cabinets and workspace dividers, set against green walls that cover most of the structural columns throughout the office.

Raefer Wallis is the Founder and CEO of GIGA, as well as the Principal of A00 Architecture. Bridging the gap between IT, material science and the built environment, his software is used by the world’s largest developers and design firms while being designed to accelerate environmental regeneration. Recipient of numerous awards for design and design sustainability, he lectures extensively both in China and Internationally. He received his masters degree in Architecture at McGill University in Montreal, Canada prior to setting up his Shanghai practice in 2004.
GIGA is an independent third-party specialized in building material research and cloud software. GIGA's integrated team of architects, engineers, software programmers, chemists, and researchers work in partnership with current licensed Users to deliver user-designed tools and solutions that are most needed and market relevant. GIGA is focused on bringing solutions to the world's largest construction market and has been adopted by designers from more than 60 of the world's leading design firms.
RESET™ is a project certification focused on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and Health. Launched in 2009 as a system for benchmarking healthy building materials, RESET™ is now being released in stages for use in projects. Using a globally accessible VOC calculator and a database of compliant materials, RESET™ is pioneering research on the cumulative impact of materials within an enclosed space.
