Design in the Sustainable Era: Green Drinks July Forum @ Arup
- 17-07-2014 19:00 - 21:00
- Arup Associates, Shanghai
The brands we know and love are increasingly becoming aware of the waste and high carbon generation from their products and packaging. From water bottles, to shelves, to clothing, product and packaging design is in the wake of a revolution. Designers make it their utmost goal to prioritize sustainability without compromising functionality.
From manufacturing to discarding, all intermittent steps need to be considered when designing a product or its packaging.
How can companies reduce their environmental impact from manufacturing using low-carbon technologies? How do we ensure that products are fully recyclable or ‘up-cyclable’ and not ‘down-cyclable’? How do designers create durable products that follow a cradle-to-cradle design?
Note: This event is free to everyone who registers, so PLEASE REGISTER below. A token RMB20 will be collected from non-registered guests.
Subject: Jon will share his experience of unknowingly compromising functionality within an environmentally sensitive product. He will also expand this context to the wider design community and ask if Cradle to Cradle ideologies are actually being implanted within product designs, company infrastructure and countries governments whilst looking at the adaptations and limitations the methodology must overcome before it becomes a truly tried and tested global design standpoint.
Background: Jon is a British born Industrial Designer who graduated from Brunel University in London. He has lived and worked in China for 3 years and currently works at the German design consultancy WILDDESIGN as both designer and strategist.
Richard Hsu (徐宗汉)

Human beings like to consume. We enjoy our favorite products, prefer living in large homes, and are rarely conscientious about our energy and water usage. However, our actions have consequences and every time we consume, our landfills get larger and greenhouse gases are released which adversely affect our planet.
But, there is a solution and it lies in the inspiring green designs in products, packaging, building materials, agriculture, and technologies. These disruptive ideas and technologies pave the way for a more sustainable future by easing our carbon footprint as well as creating new revenue streams and entrepreneurial opportunities.
In this series of Green Initiatives Forums at Arup from July to December, we will take a look at these inspiring breakthroughs in green technology that will lead to a paradigm shift in the way humans decide to purchase products, buy homes, and use their energy. Attendees will gain the knowledge of how they can be involved in this new wave of green technology through business and/or as consumers.
Our 'Green Inspiration' series will discuss the following topics:
If you would like to speak or propose a speaker on any of the above topics please send us an email and we'd be happy to discuss with you further.
