The True Cost: Green Drinks April Film Screening
- 13-04-2017 18:30 - 21:00
- Haworth Furniture, Shanghai
On the eve of the Shanghai Fashion Week, and in support of the Shanghai 13-in-31 Challenge, Green Initiatives organizes a special screening of The True Cost, a 2015 documentary film directed by Andrew Morgan that focuses on fast fashion. This is GI's 75th monthly film screening to raise awareness of social and environmental issues through films.
The film discusses several aspects of the garment industry from production—mainly exploring the life of low-wage workers in developing countries—to its after-effects such as river and soil pollution, pesticide contamination, disease and death. Using an approach that looks at environmental, social and psychological aspects, it also examines consumerism and mass media, ultimately linking them to global capitalism.
The documentary is a collage of several interviews with environmentalists, garment workers, factory owners, and people organizing fair trade companies or promoting sustainable clothing production.
Film screening will be followed by a short discussion with Sophie Tsuei, one of the organizers of the 13-in-31 Challenge that has been the guiding force behind encouraging Shanghai citizens to select 13 pieces of clothing as part of the challenge, and creatively wear (and share photographs) over the next 31 days.

About the Film
This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?
Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.
